How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?

Copy the video link, paste it into the downloader above and click Get Thumbnails. Then press Download next to the size you want. It is free, works in any browser on phone or computer, needs no account and adds no watermark.

  1. Copy the video link. On a computer copy it from the address bar. In the YouTube app tap Share, then Copy link.
  2. Paste it into the box. You can paste a normal, youtu.be, Shorts, live or embed link, or just the 11-character video ID.
  3. Download the size you need. The HD 1280×720 version is the largest and is shown first when YouTube has it.

YouTube thumbnail sizes

YouTube stores every thumbnail at a public address: https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg. These are the standard files:

File nameSizeRatioExists for
maxresdefault.jpg1280 × 72016:9Some videos
sddefault.jpg640 × 4804:3Some videos
hqdefault.jpg480 × 3604:3All videos
mqdefault.jpg320 × 18016:9All videos
default.jpg120 × 904:3All videos

The 4:3 files (640×480 and 480×360) can show black bars above and below a wide thumbnail. Download the 1280×720 version when it exists. If no HD file exists, YouTube did not create one for that video and no tool can get a larger original.

Download thumbnails for Shorts, live streams and on mobile

Paste a Shorts or live link the same way. Some Shorts only have the smaller sizes, and the tool only shows sizes that exist. On iPhone, if the image opens instead of saving, press and hold it and choose Save to Photos.

Can I use someone else's thumbnail?

Use downloads for research, mood boards and recovering your own thumbnails. The artwork belongs to the creator, so ask permission before using it in ads, products or as your own video's thumbnail. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

YouTube thumbnail downloader FAQ

How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?

Copy the video link, paste it into the downloader above, click Get Thumbnails and press Download next to the size you want. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.

What is the maximum YouTube thumbnail size I can download?

The largest standard file is 1280×720 pixels (maxresdefault.jpg). YouTube only creates it for some videos; older uploads may stop at 640×480 or 480×360.

Can I download a YouTube thumbnail in 4K or 1080p?

Not from the standard public file names. The largest one is 1280×720, so a '4K' thumbnail from another site is usually an upscaled image.

Does this work for YouTube Shorts and live streams?

Yes. Paste a normal video link, a youtu.be link, a Shorts link, a live link, an embed link or just the 11-character video ID.

Does the downloader upload my links or files to a server?

No. Thumbnails are loaded straight from YouTube's public image servers into your browser. GetToolset does not store the links you enter.

Is it legal to download someone else's YouTube thumbnail?

Private research and reference use is generally lower risk, but the artwork belongs to the creator. Ask for permission before using it commercially or as your own thumbnail. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

Deep Dive & Practical Guide

Why I Started Downloading HD YouTube Thumbnails (My Analytics Story)

Author: • Topic: YouTube CTR Optimization & Graphic Strategy

Back in late 2023, my YouTube analytics made me want to shut my laptop and walk away. I spent two whole weekends filming a tutorial, edited every single frame, polished audio, and uploaded it with huge hopes. Result? Thirty-four views in five days.

Meanwhile, another creator in my exact same topic put up a mediocre 5-minute video and pulled forty thousand views in forty-eight hours. When I put our videos side by side on a smartphone screen, his cover image screamed for attention. Mine looked like a foggy, dull screenshot.

What I Noticed Looking at Original HD Covers

  • The eyes have extra lighting: Top creators almost always brush extra brightness into their pupils. On small mobile screens, the human visual system prioritizes illuminated facial features.
  • Three words, never ten: High-CTR thumbnails limit text to a maximum of three large, punchy words highlighted with thick black drop strokes.
  • Color contrast that stands out: Contrasting backgrounds (such as deep dark gray against neon yellow or electric green) maximize readability across both light and dark YouTube UI themes.
